Breast Liposuction

This information is of a general nature only and is for public information and education. Your individual problem needs to be assessed by your family doctor who will advise you on appropriate further steps.

Liposuction for reduction of breast volume is a technique that can be used in some patients.

The breast is made up of a number of tissues including glandular tissue which is fibrous and not suitable for liposuction and a variable amount of fat. The fat in the breast can be removed by liposuction. Hence, a breast with more fat in it is more suited for liposuction than a breast with more glandular tissue in it. However, one must remember that breast reduction surgery is not only about volume reduction but also about creation of a new breast mound.

Surgery, and especially the vertical mammoplasty technique of breast reduction, permits the making of a good mound with the right shape and position. Liposuction, if used in the right patient, will give a similar satisfactory mound. This technique can only be used for a limited reduction and is not applicable for large reductions. The skin tone must be good so that there will be adequate skin contracture which is an important contributor to a satisfactory result after all liposuction procedures.

Breast liposuction is a good technique in young girls who have very large breasts including in the extreme condition of virginal breast hypertrophy where there is very rapid growth of breasts soon after puberty. Reduction surgery is best kept for after breast growth has finally ceased.
